Description
This side plate is made of stoneware, 22cm across and 3cm tall, and finished in a white reactive glaze with a fine speckle across the whole surface. At 22cm it is what we think of as the size between a saucer and a dinner plate, the one most households want at breakfast for a slice of toast, a pastry or a little fruit. A low, gently curved wall gives it slightly more depth than a flat plate, so a dressing or a few crumbs stay put. It weighs 0.55KG, which gives it a solid, settled feel on the table.
Use it at breakfast, at lunch for a sandwich or a slice of quiche, and in the evening as a starter or dessert plate, or as a bread plate laid to the left of each dinner plate. Because it goes in the microwave, it is just as handy for reheating a single portion at the end of a long day. The speckled white glaze is quiet enough for a busy family kitchen table every morning, and it still looks considered when friends come for supper or a long Sunday lunch, when cake often follows the main course.
A reactive glaze shifts as it is fired, so the speckle and tone vary a little from one plate to the next and each piece has its own character. Day to day, the plate goes straight in the dishwasher after a meal. It can also go in the oven, so you can warm plates before serving a hot starter or a pudding; stoneware holds heat well. The styling props shown are not included. For a relaxed table we like to stack it on a larger plate over a woven placemat, and let the white speckle sit against wood and clear glass.

Can I warm the plates in the oven?
Yes. The plate can go in the oven, so you can warm it before serving a hot starter or a pudding.
