Description

A cushion cover 60cm by 40cm, flat woven in wool with a rust ground. The colour is not laid in flat: the yarns run from brick through terracotta to a pale sand across the width, so the face reads as a field of drifting bands rather than one tone. A single line of short cream bars crosses it above the middle, patches of grey green break through the rust lower down, and a wide band of undyed oatmeal in a coarser, chunkier weave runs along the bottom edge. It is supplied as a cover, without an inner.

Forty centimetres high against sixty wide is a back-support shape rather than a square one: it takes the hollow of the back in an armchair, or lies along the front of a row of squares on a sofa. The weave is ridged enough to catch a raking light, which is what separates it from the flat squares it is likely to sit against. Rust holds against oatmeal, grey and bare timber, and the cover already carries all three in its own banding.

The yarn is wool blended with recycled polyester, the polyester made by turning plastic waste into a lasting yarn, and the cover is woven on a traditional handloom in India. The banding comes out of the weaving itself rather than off a print roller, so the drifts of colour land in different places on every cover. Aakash is made in a 50 x 50cm square as well.

How do I look after it?

Larger and more stubborn stains should be dealt with professionally.

Is it colourfast?

Yes. Cushion covers and throws are tested for colourfastness.
