Description
The Knightsbridge AC651581EM is a 5ft single-lamp fluorescent batten with a high-frequency ballast, emergency backup battery and IP65-rated yellow polycarbonate housing. It accepts one 58W 5ft T8 fluorescent tube (sold separately) and runs on 110V mains. The emergency function provides maintained, non-maintained or switched backup lighting during mains failure, making it suitable for industrial sites, construction areas, warehouses and plant rooms where both task lighting and safety compliance are required.
Designed for surface mounting on walls or ceilings, the fitting comes with 12 stainless steel fixing clips, a mounting bracket and push-fit terminals for quick installation. The IP65 rating protects the internal ballast and emergency circuitry from dust ingress and water jets from any direction, so it can be installed in washdown areas, outdoor covered locations and damp environments. The prismatic polycarbonate diffuser spreads the light output across the full 1563mm length of the fitting, reducing glare and dark spots under the fitting.
The yellow polycarbonate body gives the fitting high visibility in safety-critical environments and pairs with yellow hard hat zones, caution markings and hazardous area signage. The polycarbonate construction is impact-resistant to IK08, protecting the tube and ballast from knocks in active work areas. The Class I earthing system requires a connection to a protective earth conductor during installation.

Frequently Asked
Does the emergency function require testing?
Yes. All emergency lighting in the UK must be tested monthly for function and annually for duration under BS 5266-1 or BS EN 50172. The fitting supports maintained, non-maintained and switched emergency modes, which determine how the emergency lamp operates during mains failure. Maintained mode keeps the lamp on constantly; non-maintained mode activates the lamp only during power loss; switched mode allows manual control while providing automatic backup.
What T8 tube does it take?
The fitting accepts one 5ft (1500mm) 58W T8 fluorescent tube. Tubes are sold separately. The high-frequency ballast is compatible with standard tri-phosphor T8 lamps and reduces flicker compared to conventional magnetic ballasts.
Can it be installed outdoors?
The IP65 rating protects the fitting from dust and water jets, so it can be installed in covered outdoor locations such as loading bays, canopies, external storage areas and sheltered walkways. It should not be installed in direct exposure to rain or where it could be submerged.
What is the emergency backup duration?
Emergency duration is typically 3 hours from a fully charged battery, in line with BS 5266-1 requirements for escape route lighting. The battery recharges automatically when mains power is restored. The warranty covers the fitting for 3 years but excludes the emergency battery, which is a consumable component.
