Description
The Knightsbridge 5ft 35W T5 HF single non-corrosive fluorescent emergency batten is a 1510mm linear fitting housed in grey polycarbonate with a prismatic diffuser and an IP65 rating against dust and low-pressure water jets. The fitting uses a single T5 fluorescent tube (sold separately) driven by a high-frequency electronic ballast with soft-start, and includes emergency battery backup configurable in maintained, non-maintained or switched modes.
Designed for warehouses, workshops, garages, plant rooms, industrial corridors and external covered areas where emergency lighting is required by regulation, the batten combines task lighting with safety backup. The maintained mode keeps the lamp lit continuously on mains power and switches to battery during power failure. Non-maintained mode activates the lamp only during power failure. Switched mode allows the lamp to be controlled by a wall switch on mains power but activates on battery during failure.
The polycarbonate body resists impact and corrosion better than steel or aluminium in damp or chemically-exposed environments, while the prismatic lens spreads light evenly along the 1510mm length to reduce shadowing. The 65mm width and 75mm projection give a slim profile that fits tight ceiling spaces and low-clearance mounting positions. Twelve mounting clips are included, allowing surface-mounting directly to ceilings or beams, or suspension from chain or cable in high-bay applications.
The high-frequency ballast reduces flicker and extends tube life compared to older magnetic ballast technology. The fitting is Class I and requires an earth connection. The emergency battery is housed within the body and covered by a separate 1-year guarantee excluding battery wear, which is consumable and dependent on charge cycles.

Frequently Asked
What's the difference between maintained, non-maintained and switched emergency modes?
Maintained mode keeps the lamp lit continuously on mains power and switches to battery during power failure. Non-maintained mode activates the lamp only during power failure, keeping it off during normal operation. Switched mode allows the lamp to be controlled by a wall switch on mains power but activates on battery during failure. The mode is set during installation by the electrician.
Does the tube come with the fitting?
No. The fitting requires a single 35W T5 fluorescent tube, sold separately. Standard T5 tubes are widely available and typically last 15,000-20,000 hours under high-frequency ballast operation.
Can it be mounted outdoors?
The IP65 rating protects against dust and low-pressure water jets, making it suitable for covered outdoor areas such as loading bays, covered walkways and external plant rooms. It should not be exposed to direct rain or submersion.
How long does the emergency battery last during a power cut?
Emergency battery duration is typically 3 hours at full output, as required by UK emergency lighting regulations. The battery recharges automatically when mains power is restored. Battery performance degrades over time and is excluded from the 1-year warranty as it is a consumable component.
