Description

A flat woven rug, 240cm by 150cm, on a natural jute ground with a broad band of stripes running across the middle of it. The stripes are narrow and uneven, printed in sage, teal and a grey blue that sit close enough in tone to read as one band from across a room and as separate lines up close. Both short ends finish in a knotted fringe of the same undyed yarn. There is no pile: the rug is 1cm thick and flat.

At 240 by 150cm this covers the floor under a three seat sofa and a low table with room to walk round it, or lies across the foot of a double bed. On bare boards in front of a sofa the striped band runs across the width of the room. At 1cm there is nothing to catch under a door.

The rug is jute and cotton. It is woven on a handloom first and the stripe is put on afterwards by hand screen printing, so the edge of each line varies and the colour sits on the surface rather than running through the yarn. The fringes are finished by hand. Zairya runs to cushion covers in two sizes in the same sea foam, and to a kilim rug of the same 150 by 240cm.
