Description
These are two round stoneware plates for the Christmas table, each 16cm across and 2.5cm tall, in a soft cream with a painted rim. One carries a little drum hanging from a sprig of pine, the other a horn tied with a bow, and a small heart sits above each branch. At 16cm across they are side plate size, right for a mince pie, a slice of Christmas cake or a few biscuits rather than a full dinner. Stoneware is a dense, hard-wearing ceramic, which suits plates that come out every December.
We see them on the table from Advent afternoons through to Boxing Day, whenever someone wants a small plate for something sweet. Sold as a set of two, with the drum on one and the horn on the other, they suit a couple setting a festive table, and they make an easy present for someone who loves Christmas. They also sit happily beside a dinner plate as the side plate for bread or cheese, and they are just right for toast or a pastry on Christmas morning. Keep one by the tree with biscuits for visitors, or leave one out on Christmas Eve with a mince pie for whoever comes down the chimney.
The motifs are applied as a decal and finished with handpainted details. Both plates go in the dishwasher, so clearing up after a long lunch is simple, and they can go in the microwave and the oven too, handy for warming a mince pie on the plate it will be eaten from. Stoneware holds heat well, which is worth knowing when you warm the plates before serving. For styling, lay the drum and the horn side by side at each end of a linen runner, or stack them on plain plates so the motifs peep out between courses.
