Description

A counter stool with a back, built on a pale acacia frame with hand-woven jute panels set into both the seat and the backrest. The back panel is a shallow rectangle carried between two uprights that continue up from the rear legs, and the seat is a woven pad held in a framed surround. The four legs splay outward as they drop and are braced by stretchers at two heights, with the front pair set high and flat enough to take the feet.

The seat sits at 70cm and the back rises to 112cm, so the stool stands well above a dining chair and belongs at a kitchen island or a breakfast bar rather than at a table. It is 54cm wide and 62cm deep, so two will line up along 110cm of counter with the seats clear of each other. At 11.7kg it stays where it is put rather than sliding back with the sitter.

The frame is acacia and the panels are jute. Jute is a fast growing, rain fed crop that needs little fertiliser, and the fibre spins into a thread strong enough to take a seat. Both panels are woven by hand, so the tension and the run of the strands differ from one stool to the next, and the acacia is left in its own tone with the grain and the knots showing through. The same stool is made in chocolate brown, and the Vinay range also runs to dining chairs and a backless counter stool.

Frequently Asked

How high is the seat?

70cm, which is counter height. The back rises to 112cm overall.

Does it have a back?

Yes. A woven jute panel is carried between two uprights behind the seat. The Vinay range also holds a backless counter stool.

What are the woven panels made from?

Jute, woven by hand onto an acacia frame.

Does it come in another colour?

Yes. The same stool is made in chocolate brown.

How do I look after it?

Wipe the wood regularly with a soft dry cloth, working in the direction of the grain, to take off dust and moisture. Mild soap and water can be used, but sparingly, because excess water may damage the finish. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive materials away from it. Do not soak the jute: wipe it with a dry cloth and spot clean only where it is needed.
