Description

The Varas is a 14 light LED bar pendant from Schuller comprising fourteen vertical metal tubes in alternating black and gold finishes, each housing an integrated LED and opal acrylic diffuser, suspended at varied heights from a rectangular black metal canopy. The canopy measures 82cm wide by 25cm deep, with the tubes dropping between 50cm and 300cm depending on installation requirements. Combined output is 70W at 3000K warm white, and the fitting is dimmable when paired with a compatible LED dimmer.

Designed for high-ceiling spaces such as double-height entrance halls, stairwells, dining rooms with 3m+ ceiling heights, and commercial lobbies, the Varas creates a vertical cascade of light and shadow. The staggered tube arrangement means the pendant fills the vertical space rather than sitting as a flat plane, giving depth when viewed from multiple angles. The 82cm canopy length suits positioning above long dining tables, kitchen islands and reception desks where the fixture needs to stretch along the length of the surface below.

The black tubes are finished in a low-sheen matte that absorbs light, while the gold tubes carry a glossy metallic finish that reflects both daylight and the LED output from neighbouring tubes. This contrast creates a rhythmic interplay between absorption and reflection as you move around the room. Each tube houses a linear LED strip behind an opal acrylic diffuser, which softens the output to prevent glare and distributes light evenly along the length of each element. The 11.6kg total weight requires secure fixing to a ceiling joist or structural support rather than plasterboard alone.

Is the Varas dimmable?

Yes. The integrated 70W LED is dimmable when connected to a compatible leading-edge or trailing-edge LED dimmer. Check dimmer compatibility with the manufacturer before installation, as not all dimmers support the full 70W load.

What ceiling height is needed?

The Varas is designed for ceiling heights of 3m or above. The adjustable drop ranges from 50cm to 300cm, allowing the pendant to be set appropriately for the room. In a dining room with a 3m ceiling, the tubes would typically be set to drop 100-150cm to sit well above the table without overwhelming headroom.

How are the tubes arranged at different heights?

Each tube has an adjustable cable inside that is set during installation. The installer adjusts individual tube drops to create the staggered cascade effect. The assembly instruction PDF linked in the Downloads tab shows the recommended configuration.

Can it be installed on a sloped ceiling?

The rectangular canopy is designed for flat ceilings. Installation on a sloped ceiling would require a custom ceiling rose or adapter to keep the canopy level, which may not be practical given the 11.6kg weight and the need for secure structural fixing.
