Description

The Valinha is a dinner plate in grey earthenware, 27cm across and 3.5cm deep. It is a coupe shape with no separate rim: the face sweeps up in one curve to a plain edge. A faint spiral runs out from a point at the centre, moulded into the clay rather than printed on the glaze. The glaze is finely speckled, paler at the outer edge and warmer through the middle, and it runs thin over the lip to leave a dark olive line right around the rim.

At 27cm it takes a main course without crowding it, and at 3.5cm deep a stack sits low on a cupboard shelf. Laid with the Valinha side plate and cereal bowl it makes a place setting in one tone, and the range also holds a round platter, a serving bowl, a footed bowl and two jugs in the same grey. Against a pale wood table the glaze reads cooler and closer to white than it does on its own.

The clay is Portuguese and each plate is poured into a mould and finished by hand. The reactive glaze goes on in layers and moves as it fires, so the depth of tone and the run of the speckling differ from one plate to the next.
