Description
This is a stoneware vase in the shape of a bird, with a slender head and neck at one end and a tall open tail at the other end, which takes the stems. It is 19cm long, 7.5cm wide and 19cm tall, so it stands as high as it is long, yet it is narrow enough for a slim windowsill or the front edge of a bookshelf. Painted brushwork marks out a wing on each side, a row of tapering strokes runs around the rim, and a tiny dot of paint gives the bird its beak. The body is cream, and at 0.76KG it feels substantial in the hand.
We see it as a vase for dried stems: a few sprigs of grass, a single seed head or a spray of dried lavender suit the narrow opening and let the bird's outline stay the main point. It sits happily on a sideboard, a hall console, a bedside table or a mantelpiece, and because it is only 7.5cm wide it fits shallow shelves where a wider vase would crowd the space. Empty, it holds its own as a small sculpture on a stack of books. It makes a thoughtful present for someone who loves birds or hand-painted pottery, and it looks as much at home in a cottage kitchen as in a calm, pared-back living room.
The vase is made entirely of stoneware and is partly hand-decorated, and the brushwork shows it: the strokes at the rim taper unevenly and the lines of the wing wander slightly, which is a large part of its charm. The surface has a soft sheen that catches the light along the curve of the neck. The styling props shown are not included. Give it room so that the head and the tail both read clearly, and keep the stems light and airy; a dense bunch would hide the shape that makes it worth having.

Frequently Asked
What material is the vase?
It is made entirely of stoneware and is partly hand-decorated, so the painted wing and rim show the touch of a brush.
How big is it?
It is 19cm long, 7.5cm wide and 19cm tall and weighs 0.76KG, a compact size for a narrow shelf, windowsill or mantelpiece.
Where do the stems go?
The opening is at the top of the bird's tall tail, opposite its head, and it suits a few dried grasses or slender dried stems.
Does it look finished from both sides?
Yes. Each side carries a painted wing, and painted strokes taper down from the rim, so it works facing either way on a shelf.
What colour is the vase?
The body is cream, with darker painted brushwork marking the wing and rim and a tiny painted beak at the tip of the head.
