Description

The Thorpe Large Hurricane is a 78cm tall floor lantern constructed from iron with a smoky metallic gold finish and two vertical clear glass panels set into opposing faces. The iron frame forms a tall rectangular column with rounded corners, and the glass panels allow candlelight to project outward while the metal sides block direct glare from the front and back angles.

Designed for floor placement in hallways, beside fireplaces, on wide windowsills or in alcoves, the hurricane houses pillar candles up to approximately 22cm diameter within its 24cm square footprint. The 78cm height positions the flame at mid-thigh to knee level when standing, making it visible from across a room without being at eye-level when seated. The glass panels protect the flame from drafts while allowing heat to vent through the open top.

The smoky gold finish on the iron gives a warmer, less reflective tone than polished brass, pairing well with warm greys, creams and natural wood furniture. At 7.96kg the hurricane has enough weight to remain stable on carpets and rugs without needing additional ballast. The clear glass panels are removable for cleaning and candle replacement by lifting the hurricane off its base.

The Thorpe range includes smaller hurricanes at 28cm and 53cm heights, plus coordinating furniture pieces (shelving unit, coffee table, side table, console table) in the same smoky gold iron finish, allowing multiple pieces to be used together in a room scheme.

The internal space is approximately 24cm square, so pillar candles up to 22cm diameter fit comfortably. The 78cm height allows for tall pillar candles of 30-40cm height, though shorter candles can also be used.

Can it be used outdoors?

The iron construction will oxidise if exposed to rain or prolonged damp conditions. The hurricane is designed for indoor use only. For outdoor lanterns, look for products with an IP rating or weather-resistant coating.

How are the glass panels fitted?

The glass panels sit in recessed channels within the iron frame. They can be removed for cleaning or candle replacement by lifting the main body of the hurricane off its base, then sliding the glass panels out from the top.

Yes. The Thorpe hurricane is available in three heights: 28cm, 53cm and 78cm. All three share the same smoky gold iron finish and 24cm square footprint, allowing them to be grouped together.
