Description

This is an oval stoneware platter, 32cm long, 24cm wide and 4cm tall, and its character comes from the rim. Fine ridged rings run round the edge in soft, blended bands of glaze, framing a smooth, glossy well in the centre, so the piece has depth and movement rather than a single flat colour. The same rings carry on down the outside wall, so it looks as considered from the side as from above. Stoneware is dense and hard-wearing, and at 1KG this multicoloured platter has a reassuring weight in the hand.

At this size it is a serving platter rather than a dinner plate: big enough to carry sliced roast meat, grilled vegetables or a spread of cheese and fruit to the table, yet still easy to pass along it. The raised edge keeps sauces and juices where they belong. It suits a relaxed weekend lunch, a family supper or a summer table laid for friends, and between meals it sits happily on an open kitchen shelf or a dresser, propped upright so the ringed rim shows.
