Description

Tana is a pair of small stoneware candle holders, one shaped to take a tealight and the other a candle, both finished in a speckled reactive glaze that gives a soft, mottled surface. Each is built in rounded, stacked sections: one in plump curves, the other in tighter ribs, each sitting on a low domed base in a contrasting tone. Together they are multicoloured and read as two little sculptures as much as two holders. They are compact, too: one is 6cm across and 7cm tall and the other is 6cm across and 7.5cm tall, so they slip into a gap on a shelf where a larger holder would crowd.

We like them on a dining table, set close together in the middle for an evening with friends, or on a mantelpiece, sideboard or windowsill where their rounded outlines catch the light. Because they are small, they work well grouped with vases, bowls and other ceramics on a bookshelf, adding a flicker of candlelight among the books. They suit anyone who enjoys colour and playful shapes in a home, and they make a cheerful housewarming or birthday gift, easy to wrap and easy to place in almost any room.

Both holders are made of 100% stoneware, a dense clay fired hard, which gives them a satisfying, solid feel in the hand. The finish is a reactive glaze, and reactive glazes move and pool as they fire, so the speckle and depth of tone vary a little from piece to piece; no two pairs are quite identical. They are not for the dishwasher, so clean them by hand with a soft damp cloth and dry them well. For styling, choose candles in one soft neutral shade and let the multicoloured glaze do the talking.
