Description

These are two mouthblown glass candle holders, one 19cm tall and one 22cm tall, each 8cm across. What sets them apart is the stem: a rope of glass twisted into a tight spiral that climbs from the round foot to a tall, narrow cup made to hold a dinner candle upright. The cup and the foot are translucent green glass, so the flame's glow passes through them rather than stopping at the rim. Because the two stand at different heights, they read as a relaxed, staggered pair rather than a matching row, which is why they look so natural side by side.

They belong to our Christmas range, and they come into their own on a festive dining table, along a mantelpiece or on a sideboard in the hall, where the spiral in each stem catches the candlelight. The green glass sits happily beside pine, holly and winter foliage, yet nothing about the pair ties it to December: on a console table or a bedroom chest of drawers they suit any evening that calls for candlelight. They also make a good gift for someone who hosts, because a pair of different heights is already arranged and needs no further thought.

Each holder is made from 100% glass, and each is mouthblown. Mouthblown glass is formed by hand while hot rather than pressed in a mould, so no two pieces come out quite the same. The foot is round and gently flared, spreading wider than the slim stem and cup above it. The styling props shown are not included. For a balanced arrangement, set the taller holder just behind the shorter one, and use two candles of the same length so the step between the holders stays visible once they are lit.
