Description
The Souri is a brown stoneware vase with a shape all its own: a full, rounded lower body that draws in at a gentle waist, swells again at the shoulder and narrows to an open neck. Down one side runs a column of open loops, like a ladder of small rings, which gives it a playful, sculptural outline. It is 23cm tall and 19cm across, a compact size for a shelf or table rather than the floor, and at 1.25KG it has a solid, reassuring weight for a vase of its height.
We like it on a bookcase, a sideboard, a mantelpiece or a console table in the hallway, anywhere it sits near eye level and the loops can be seen in profile. Fill it with a few dried stems, grasses or seed heads, or leave it empty and let its outline do the work; it reads as a small sculpture as much as a vase. It sits happily among books, other ceramics and woven pieces, and suits a warm, earthy living room or a bedroom shelf just as well. It also makes a thoughtful gift for someone who collects ceramics and likes a piece with a little character.
It is made entirely of stoneware, a dense clay fired at a high temperature, which gives it its weight and its firm, solid feel. The surface is brown flecked with darker speckles and carries a soft sheen that catches the light, and the speckling continues inside the rim. The loops run down one side from the rim almost to the base, so it is worth deciding which way it faces before adding stems. Turn it so the loops sit on the open side of a shelf, where light passes through the rings, and keep any stems tall and sparse so the curves of the body stay in view.
