Description

This is a set of four cream stoneware mugs for the Christmas months, each one scattered with hand-painted snowflakes around the body while the curved handle stays plain. Each mug holds 292ml, a proper mug size for tea, coffee or hot chocolate, and stands 8cm across and 9cm tall. The shape is soft and rounded, swelling gently through the middle and drawing in slightly towards the rim, and it rests on a short foot that lifts it neatly off the table. Stoneware is a dense, hard-wearing ceramic, which suits a mug that will be reached for every morning of the season.

With four in the set, they cover a family breakfast through December, a pot of tea with friends on Christmas Eve or a round of hot chocolate after a cold walk. The glossy cream surface sits happily alongside plain tableware, wooden boards and linen tablecloths, so the snowflakes bring a festive note to the kitchen table without taking it over. We think they make an easy present for anyone who likes their kitchen to follow the seasons, and for a household of four there is one each, with nobody left using an odd mug from the back of the cupboard.

The snowflakes are a hand-painted finish on the stoneware, and the care is refreshingly simple: the mugs go in the dishwasher and the microwave, and they can go in the oven too. That makes them practical through the busiest weeks of the year, when nobody wants a mug that has to be washed by hand after every cup. For a styling note, line all four along an open shelf or a dresser with the handles turned the same way, so that between cups of tea they become part of the winter decoration.
