Description

The Shanto is a tapered drum covered in kilim, a flat woven textile with no pile, made in wool over a jute warp. The palette is softer than the other kilims here: terracotta and a warm ochre against undyed cream, with the rust held back rather than dominant, worked into stepped blocks and diamonds. The jute warp shows through as a fine grid across the whole surface. This is the medium: 18.5cm tall and 30.5cm across.

Each shade is cut from a length of woven kilim, so where the cut falls decides what pattern lands on it. The weave varies from shade to shade: some run a blockwork pattern, others a large stepped diamond, which is the range rather than an inconsistency in it. At 30.5cm this is the size most ordinary table lamps are built around, and a paler kilim is the easier of these to place: it brings pattern without the weight of a strong rust. It fits a table lamp, a floor lamp or a ceiling pendant. It weighs 0.57kg.

Kilim is woven by interlacing warp and weft on a flat loom, which is what gives every diagonal its stepped edge. The Shanto is wool over jute. No bulb, base or fitting is included.
