Description

This is a set of four small stoneware bowls, each 12.5cm across and 6cm tall and holding 200ml. The outside is hand-painted with a pattern of upright bands, half-circles and pointed diamond shapes, while the inside is finished in plain pink, its brushstrokes still visible in the glaze. Each bowl sits on a short foot, and the rim follows a gently uneven line rather than a perfect circle, which suits the painted decoration. Stoneware is fired hard and dense, so it feels solid in the hand and stands up well to everyday use.

At 200ml, these are side and dessert bowls rather than cereal bowls: the right size for a scoop of ice cream, yoghurt with fruit, olives, nuts, a dip or a sauce on the table. A set of four lays a small breakfast table or a supper for friends, and the pink inside gives fruit and pale puddings a warm background. They are just as useful in the kitchen for holding measured spices or chopped herbs while you cook, and on a dressing table or hall shelf one makes a small catch-all for rings, keys or hair ties.

They go in the dishwasher and the microwave, so warming a small portion or clearing up after a meal needs no special treatment.
