Description
The Rio 9 is a linear chandelier: five small dome shades hang in a neat row beneath a long straight bar, all in matt white. Each dome is 9cm across, rounded at the crown and open at the base, so the light falls downwards in five soft pools rather than spreading across the ceiling. The whole fitting is 120cm long and 9.5cm tall, a slim, low line that reads clearly without filling the room. It takes five GX53 lamps, one in each shade, and works from an ordinary on-off switch rather than a dimmer, so pair it with a standard wall switch.
Because the shades line up along a single bar, this is a fitting for long surfaces. We like it over a dining table, where the five pools of light run the length of the table, and it works just as well above a long desk in a study, a sideboard in a living room or a reception counter. The modern, Scandinavian lines suit pale wood, plain plaster and simple furniture, and the matt white finish sits quietly against a white or light ceiling. It is rated IP20, so it is for dry rooms only. As a mains fitting, it is for a qualified electrician to install.
The structure is iron, finished in matt white, and the fitting is fed by a textile cable 2m long. Two fine suspension wires hold the bar level, and an 8cm canopy sits neatly against the ceiling. It runs on 220 to 240V mains and carries a 3 year guarantee. For styling, centre it along the length of the table so the end shades sit just inside its edges, and let the white domes stand against darker walls or warm timber for a crisp contrast.
