Reel Perforated Rim Round Wall Mirror 100cm - Black

Reel is a 100cm round mirror set inside a black metal band that has been pierced with a row of round holes all the way round its edge. The holes are cut clean through the band, so the wall behind shows through them, and that row of openings is what gives the piece its name and most of its character.

The perforated rim does something a plain frame cannot: it breaks the outline of the circle instead of drawing a hard line round it, so the mirror sits more lightly on the wall than a black framed circle usually does. It works well on a pale wall where the holes read as dots of wall colour, and less well on a busy wallpaper where they get lost. It is rated bathroom proof and hangs one way up. At 12kg and 5cm deep it is a one person lift, hung on two hooks and plugs, with nothing to assemble.

The band is black metal on mirrored glass. Clean the glass with cleaner sprayed onto a cloth and dust the band dry, since the holes will hold water if you wipe them wet. The 5cm depth means the mirror stands off the wall a little and throws a shadow line under the rim, which is worth knowing if you are hanging it where a light will rake across it from above. Jeffrey Huyghe designed it and it is made in Europe. The band is a pressed ring rather than a strip bent to shape, which is why the holes stay evenly spaced all the way round instead of crowding at a seam.
