Description

The Rana wide basket is handwoven seagrass, 52.5cm across and 35cm tall. A flared collar turns out at the rim, the body swells below it to its widest point and then draws in sharply to a narrower foot, so the basket reads as a low pot rather than a straight sided bin. Two bands of rust dyed grass run round it, a narrow one just under the collar and a broader one across the turn of the belly. The weave is fine and horizontal, the top is open and there are no handles.

At 52.5cm across and only 35cm tall this is a floor basket rather than a shelf one, standing on the floor with the rim at about seat height. The width suits bulky things that will not fold small, firewood and folded blankets among them, and the low sides let a rolled throw sit proud of the rim instead of being pushed down into it. It keeps its shape standing empty.

The basket is seagrass throughout, dyed in rust and left in its own tone for the undyed bands, then woven by hand over a wide low form. Small differences in tone and in the tightness of the weave run from one basket to the next. Three Rana baskets are made, a short one, a tall one and this wide one. There is no lid.

Frequently Asked

How big is the Rana wide basket?

52.5cm across and 35cm tall.

What is it made from?

Seagrass. The grass is dyed in rust and natural shades before it is woven.

Does it come with a lid?

No. The top is open.

Will every basket look the same?

Not exactly. Each basket is woven by hand, so the tone of the grass and the tightness of the weave vary a little from one to the next.

How do I look after it?

Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth, or go over it with a soft bristle brush to stop dust and dirt building up in the weave.
