Preston Wooden Wall Shelf - Green

Our Preston wall shelf is a shallow pine grid that gives the small things you like to see every day a place of their own on the wall. It is 67cm long, 12cm wide and 41cm tall, laid out as open compartments five across and three down, and painted green all over, inside every compartment as well as on the frame. With only 12cm from front to back it sits close to the wall, so it gives you somewhere to put things without pushing out into the room the way a bookcase would.

It suits anyone who collects small pieces and would rather see them in order than crowded along a windowsill: little vases, candle holders, shells, dried flowers, a row of thimbles or a child's keepsakes. Hang it over a sideboard or a desk in a living room, hallway or study, or on a bedroom wall where a full bookcase would feel too heavy. It also hangs the other way round, so on a tall, narrow stretch of wall beside a door or a window it can run three compartments across and five up instead, standing 67cm tall and 41cm wide.

The shelf is made entirely of pine and finished in a water based paint, with the grain of the wood still showing through. Keyhole hanging plates are fitted to the back of the frame on both a long side and a short side, which is what lets it hang wide or tall. It weighs 3.194KG, and the maker's assembly instructions come as a PDF download. Pine is a light softwood, easy to handle at this size. For styling, leave most compartments empty and fill only a few, mixing heights, so each piece stands on its own against the green.
