Description
Passepartout Rect. L is a rectangular wall mirror, 105cm wide by 150cm high, in a symmetrical frame of solid oak. Its distinguishing feature is the glass: the mirrored centre does not stop at a hard edge but passes through a partially transparent border before it meets the wood, so the reflection fades out towards the frame rather than ending abruptly. The idea comes from the way a mounted artwork is presented in a gallery, where the mount separates the work from its frame. The design is by Studio Segers.
It suits a hallway, a living room or a bedroom wall where a single large piece is wanted rather than a group of smaller ones. It hangs in two directions. Because the border is partly transparent, the wall colour behind it reads through the outer band, so the piece looks different on a dark wall than on a pale one and it is worth deciding the position with that in mind. It is not rated for bathroom use. The oak frame is symmetrical on all four sides, so there is no top or bottom to get right beyond the hanging direction. At 3.5cm deep it sits close to the wall. The silvering is placed precisely so light passes through the clear outer glass, which is what gives the impression that the pane is floating. The transparent band acts as a neutral zone around the reflection, in the way a mount does around a picture. It is also made in other sizes.
The frame is solid oak and the mirror weighs 17KG, a comfortable two person lift, at 3.5cm deep. Two hooks with wall plugs are supplied and nothing needs assembling. Wipe the glass with cleaner sprayed onto a soft cloth and dust the oak dry, keeping standing water off the wood. Seven year warranty, made in Belgium.

Frequently Asked
Why does the mirror fade at the edges?
The glass is partially transparent towards the border, so the reflection softens before it reaches the oak rather than stopping at a hard edge.
What is the frame made of?
Solid oak, symmetrical on all four sides.
Will the wall colour show through?
Yes, through the transparent border. The piece looks different on a dark wall than on a pale one, so it is worth deciding the position with that in mind.
Can it be used in a bathroom?
No. This mirror is not rated for bathroom use.
What size is it and what does it weigh?
105cm wide by 150cm high and 3.5cm deep, weighing 17KG.
