Description

This stoneware dinner set gives a child their own cup, bowl and plate. Each is handpainted with multicoloured dots and a raised dog face wearing a striped party hat and a tiny bow. The face stands proud of the surface, so little fingers can trace it as well as see it. On the cup and the bowl it sits on the outside wall; on the plate it fills the centre. The cup is 9cm across and 8cm tall with a single loop handle, the bowl is 14cm across and 8cm tall, and the plate is 15.5cm across and 2cm tall.

These are sizes made for a child's meal rather than a grown-up's. The 14cm bowl takes a serving of cereal, porridge or yoghurt. The 15.5cm plate is side plate size, right for toast, sandwiches or a slice of birthday cake, and the cup suits milk or water at breakfast. Because all three pieces share one motif, the set brings a little ceremony to ordinary mornings at the kitchen table. The party hat makes it a natural choice for birthday teas and family celebrations. It also makes a cheerful present for a child's birthday, wrapped on its own or with a favourite storybook.

Every piece is 100% stoneware, a dense, hard-fired ceramic that copes well with daily use. The decoration is handpainted, which gives the dots their soft, slightly uneven edges. Care is simple: all three pieces go in the dishwasher and in the microwave, so warming porridge or clearing up after tea takes no extra fuss. They do not go in the oven. The whole set weighs 0.64KG. For a tidy place setting, rest the bowl on the plate and stand the cup beside them with its dog face turned outward, so the faces greet the child at the table.
