Description

A round storage basket 40cm across and 50cm tall to the top of its handles, hand woven in two bands. The upper band is a mid brown and the lower band a pale cream, the same coil of plaited fibre carried through in two tones. Two rope handles are worked into the rim and run back down the outside of the body as far as the base. About 10cm of the height is the handles.

At 40cm across and 40cm deep the basket takes a folded throw, a stack of magazines or the toys that end up in a sitting room, and it stands on the floor rather than on a shelf. The handles rise well clear of the rim, so it is lifted with both hands rather than gripped at the edge. It is for indoor use only and the colour may fade in sunlight, so it holds its tone better away from a south-facing window.

The basket is woven from water hyacinth and corn husk leaf. Water hyacinth is an aquatic plant that grows so freely in Vietnam that it has to be cut back, which is what makes it available in quantity. Corn husk is the outer leaf of the cob, and it was once worked into a basket as an outer layer to keep the contents as airtight as they could be kept. The weave is done by hand, so the line where the two bands meet does not fall at the same point on every basket. Nkomi is made in this size and in a smaller one at 40cm tall and 30cm across.
