Description

A dining chair with a solid mango wood frame and an upholstered seat. The back is open: two uprights carry one wide rail across the top and nothing below it, so the back reads as a single horizontal band with the room showing through beneath it. The frame is left rough sawn, with saw marks still running along the legs and the rail, and the four legs taper square to the floor. The seat is covered in natural linen woven with a fine charcoal stripe and fixed along the underside of the frame. There are no arms.

At 46cm wide the chair pulls in under a table without crowding the ones either side of it, and it is 55cm front to back and 84cm to the top of the rail. The whole chair weighs 9.5kg, so it lifts easily when a room has to be turned round, and the seat carries up to 100kg. Drawn up to a table, the open back leaves the room behind it visible.

The frame is solid mango wood, sawn rather than sanded flat, so the tone and the grain run differently from one chair to the next. The seat is upholstered by hand in natural linen and stitched to hold the striped weave flat across the seat base. The Nidhi is also made as a counter chair.

Larger stains want a professional. Keep the chair out of direct sunlight, which fades natural dyes and yarns.
