Description

The large Nalbari is a chopping board in mango wood, 60cm long, 20cm across and 2cm thick. The face is pieced together from short segments laid in a chevron, so the grain turns direction every few centimetres and the tones run from pale honey through to a deep red brown. The corners are rounded, a shaped handle projects from one short end, and a narrow tan tie is knotted through a hole in it.

At 60 x 20cm this is the longest of the three Nalbari boards, and the proportions suit a board that comes to the table as much as one that stays by the hob. It works for chopping and as a sharing platter, laid down the middle of a table with antipasti or bread along its length. The handle and the tie mean it hangs from a rail or a hook between uses rather than having to lie flat.

The wood is mango throughout, food safe, with a natural finish and no stain. The colour variation is the timber itself, and it may shift over time. Mango trees are grown first for their fruit and are cut for timber only once they have stopped bearing, which is what puts the wood into use at all and lets the growers replant. Nalbari also runs a small and a medium chopping board, two pizza boards and a set of coasters.

Frequently Asked

What sizes does the board come in?

This is the large, 60 x 20cm. There is also a small at 38 x 15cm and a medium at 50 x 16cm.

How should it be washed?

Wash it in warm soapy water after every use so it does not stain, then rinse it and dry it immediately. Do not leave it to soak.

How do I oil it?

Rub an edible oil such as olive oil or walnut oil into the surface with a dry cloth to nourish and protect the wood. Adding oil may darken the tone.

Why do the colours vary across the face?

The board is pieced together from segments of mango wood, and the variation is the natural colour of the timber rather than a stain. The colours may also change over time.

Is it food safe?

Yes, and the finish is natural.
