Description

This shallow stoneware bowl is 18cm long, 16cm wide and 2cm tall, in brown, with a raised floral motif that covers nearly its whole surface. A large open flower sits at the centre, framed by curling leaves and soft scrolls, and the outline follows the pattern rather than a plain oval: a rounded body that draws out to a pointed tip at either side, much like a stylised leaf. It is made entirely of stoneware and weighs 0.27KG, light enough to pass round the table in one hand.

Because it is approved for food, it earns its place at the table for small things: a wedge of cheese, olives and nuts with drinks, a few biscuits beside the teapot, or sliced fruit at breakfast. The relief makes it as much a decorative piece as a serving dish, so between meals it moves happily to a dressing table or bedside as a home for rings, earrings and a fine chain, or to a hall shelf as a dish for keys.
