Description

This is a set of four stoneware bowls, each 15cm across and 8cm tall and holding 525ml, a useful everyday size for cereal, porridge, soup or a side salad. The inside of each bowl carries a multicoloured pattern that spreads out from the centre like a burst, while the outside is left plain, so the colour reveals itself as you look down into the bowl. The rim follows a soft, gently uneven line, which keeps the look relaxed and informal rather than factory-perfect.

Four bowls cover breakfast for a small household or a supper table for four, and they sit as comfortably on a weekday kitchen table as on a table laid for friends. At 525ml they take a good helping of yoghurt and fruit, noodles or a pudding without looking empty, and the multicoloured interior gives a plain green salad or a pale soup a lively backdrop. They are not for the microwave, so warm anything hot in a pan first and ladle it in at the table; they also make a handsome home for olives, nuts or crisps when friends visit.

Each bowl is made from 100% stoneware, a dense, hard-wearing ceramic fired at high temperature, and the maker approves it for food. The bowls go in the dishwasher, so clearing up after a meal is simply a matter of loading them in with everything else; they are not for the oven or the microwave, so keep them for serving rather than cooking or reheating.
