Description
This small stoneware vase is shaped as a crested bird: its body forms the rounded base, and its tail feathers rise into a tall, slender neck that opens into a scalloped, petal-like rim. The bird's head curves up beside the neck, and the feathers are carved in relief, with eye-shaped markings across the wings and all the way up to the rim. The speckled blue glaze gathers more deeply in the carved lines, picking out each feather. It stands 16cm tall, 11cm long and 10.5cm wide, and weighs 0.33KG, so it is a vase for a small posy or a few single stems rather than a full bouquet.
At this size it fits the places a larger vase would crowd: a mantelpiece, a bookshelf, a bedside table, a windowsill or the corner of a desk. The narrow neck keeps a few stems upright, and dried flowers, seed heads and grasses suit it particularly well, since the vase itself carries so much pattern that a simple arrangement looks best. With nothing in it, it still works as a small ornament on a shelf. It suits anyone who likes crafted, folk-inspired pottery, and makes a thoughtful gift for a bird lover.
It is made entirely of stoneware, a dense, hard-fired clay, and finished in a glossy, speckled glaze that covers the body and stops just short of a narrow unglazed foot. The feathers are raised in the clay itself rather than painted, so the pattern has real depth when you run a finger over it. At 0.33KG it is light enough to move about as the seasons change. For styling, set it beside plain, unpatterned pottery so the carved feathers have room to show, or group it with other blue pieces for a calm, layered shelf.
