Description

This is a pair of stoneware Christmas bowls, and the two are not twins. One carries a band of hearts with a row of small dots beneath it; the other has a band of stylised birds and hearts beneath a fine patterned border at the rim. Both are cream, with a rounded body that rises from a narrow foot. Each bowl is 14cm across and 7.5cm tall and holds 500ml, which makes it a proper cereal or soup bowl rather than a small dish for dips. Stoneware is a dense ceramic fired at a high temperature.

The maker lists them as food safe, so they earn their place at the table all through December: porridge or cereal on Christmas morning, soup on a cold evening, trifle or Christmas pudding with custard after lunch. Between meals, one filled with walnuts, clementines or sweets brings a festive note to a sideboard, dresser or coffee table.
