Description

The Japandi is a handwoven rug, 150 by 240cm, made up in thick handspun yarn. Across a cream ground runs a lattice of soft-edged diamonds in clay grey brown, each one built up through the weave itself rather than printed or tufted on afterwards, so the motif carries the same loose, ropey texture as the ground around it. The surface is nubbly and uneven, and the ends finish flat with no fringe.

At 150 by 240cm it sits under a two or three seat sofa with the front legs standing on it, or fills the floor along one side of a bed. It is only 1cm thick, so a door opening over it will clear it and furniture legs stand on it without rocking. The yarn is thick and soft rather than flat and hard, and the raised motif is felt underfoot as well as seen.

The rug is handspun wool with cotton, woven on a handloom, and the pattern is built in as the weaving goes rather than applied to a finished ground. Handspun yarn is uneven by nature, so the colour shifts slightly along a single line of the motif and no two rugs come out quite alike. Some shedding of fibre is to be expected.

Frequently Asked

What size is it?

150 by 240cm, and 1cm thick.

What is it made from?

Handspun wool with cotton.

Is the pattern woven in or printed on?

Woven in. The diamonds are built through the weaving itself.

Does it shed?

Some shedding of fibre is to be expected, which is normal for the yarns used.

How do I look after it?

Blot spills straight away with a clean sponge or cloth. Vacuum with care, and not with a rotating brush head, which can damage the fibres. It can be professionally cleaned, and colours may fade in direct sunlight.
