Description

The Jahari is a large dome of open woven jute. The fibre is worked into a loose knotted net, coarse and matt, over panels that meet in visible seams running from the crown down to the rim, so the dome reads as a stitched shell rather than a single smooth piece. The weave is open enough to see straight through at every point. It measures 50cm across and 50cm tall, and hangs from a rust braided flex on a brass ceiling plate.

An open net does not soften light, it breaks it: the bulb stays visible through the mesh and the dome throws a dense pattern of small shadows onto the ceiling and the nearest walls. At 50cm in both directions it is a large object that wants to be seen whole, so it suits a bed, a table or a stairwell with height above it rather than a corridor. It takes one E27 bulb up to 40W and it is dimmable, which matters when the bulb is this exposed. The flex runs 1.5m and it is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms.

Jute is fast growing and biodegradable, taking four to six months from planting to harvest. Each dome is woven and stitched by hand, so the density of the net and the run of the seams differ from one to the next. Bulbs are not included.

Frequently Asked

How much room does it need?

50cm across and 50cm of drop, plus the flex above it. Over a bed or a table that works; in a hallway it will be in the way.

Will the bulb show through?

Yes. The net is open at every point, so the bulb is visible and the dome casts a dense pattern of small shadows around it. A frosted bulb is easier on the eye than a clear filament.

Why are the seams visible?

The dome is made from woven panels stitched together, and the seams are left on show rather than hidden. They run from the crown to the rim and no two shades carry them in quite the same place.

How do I care for it?

A soft brush to lift dust out of the weave. Jute is a natural fibre, so keep harsh chemical cleaners away from it.
