Description

The Itwa is a round wall mirror 76cm across, with a wide flat frame of hand-carved mango wood around a circular glass. The frame is carved all over in fine lines that run outward from the centre like rays, worked section by section, so the direction of the combing shifts slightly where one section meets the next. A plain narrow band is left at the inner and the outer edge. The finish is a white wash that settles into the carving and leaves the wood a pale, limed tone.

At 76cm across and 6.3kg this is a single feature rather than one of a group, and it hangs on a wall rather than standing. A round mirror suits a hallway, a spot above a console, or a bedroom wall, where a rectangle would only repeat the lines of a window or a door.

The frame is mango wood throughout and every one is carved by hand, so the depth of the lines and the run of the grain vary from mirror to mirror. Mango is used here for its light natural tone and for the variation within its grain, and working it this way keeps traditional woodworking skills in use. At 3cm deep the mirror sits close to the wall.
