Description

The Ibo is a standing shelf unit in reclaimed wood, 95cm wide, 40cm deep and 87cm tall, with three open tiers. Each tier is faced with a low board along the front, so plates and jars stand behind a lip rather than at the edge. The sides and the back are open. Four square posts carry the frame, and a small dark metal loop is set into each of the top back corners. The timber is pale and weathered, with saw marks, splits and old nail holes left in it.

The three tiers divide 87cm of height between them, so the top is at standing reach and the lowest sits close to the floor for the heavier things. At 40cm deep and 95cm wide each tier holds a long run of dishes or jars two stacks abreast. In a kitchen it takes jars on the top, bowls and plates in the middle and baskets below. It weighs 34.2kg, which is enough to keep it where it is put on a stone or a boarded floor.

The wood is reclaimed from the bodies of traditional Indian transport trucks, chosen for its grain and its weathering and assembled by hand. Every board carries its own history, so the colour, the grain and the markings run differently from one unit to the next and from shelf to shelf within the same one. The surface is sealed.
