Description

The Hakeem is a woven panel of hemp and cotton set into a mango wood frame, 60cm tall and 40cm wide. The weave is a kilim, worked flat on a handloom, and the design is built from blocks rather than a repeat: a charcoal half circle across the top corner, a pale cream block beside it, a band of mid brown running through the middle, and a row of alternating charcoal and cream bars along the bottom. Fine vertical lines are worked into the right hand edge. The weave is coarse enough to read the individual strands, and the frame is pale mango wood with its knots and grain left showing.

At 60cm by 40cm this is a single panel rather than a whole wall, and two will hang side by side with a narrow gap between. It stands 5cm off the wall, so it reads as an object with depth rather than as a print behind glass, and the raised weave catches side light from a window or a lamp. Two plates are fixed to the back of the frame to hang it from.

The panel is hemp and cotton and the frame is mango wood. The yarns take their colour from natural dyes, so the browns and the charcoal sit close to the tone of the fibre rather than over the top of it. Each panel is woven by hand, so the width of the blocks and the density of the weave differ from one piece to the next.
