Description

This small rectangular stoneware plate is 15cm long, 11.5cm wide and 2cm tall, and its face carries a large leaf pattern painted by hand. The leaf fans out in broad, rounded fronds that reach almost to the edges, so the plate looks as good propped on a shelf as it does on the table. It is multicoloured, with softly rounded corners, a low rim that rises gently from the flat centre and a weight of 0.3KG, light enough to pass round easily.

At this size it is a plate for small things rather than a meal: a slice of cake, a couple of biscuits beside the morning coffee, butter at the breakfast table, or a few olives and some cheese when friends come round for drinks. Lay several along the table and they become easy little plates for tapas or sweets after dinner. Away from the kitchen it suits a dressing table as a tray for rings and earrings, the hall as a place for keys, or the bathroom as a soap dish beside the basin. It also makes a thoughtful small gift for anyone who loves painted ceramics or wants something cheerful for the table.

It is made of 100% stoneware, a dense, hard-fired material that stands up well to daily use. The plate goes in the dishwasher, the microwave and the oven, so it can warm a pastry, carry it straight to the table and be washed with everything else afterwards. The leaf is painted by hand, so the brush strokes vary slightly from one plate to the next. Underneath, a narrow foot lifts the plate a little off the table. To show it at its best, lay it on a plain linen cloth or a wooden board, or prop it against the wall at the back of an open shelf, where the painted leaf can be seen in full.

Frequently Asked

Is the plate made of stoneware?

Yes. It is 100% stoneware, a dense, hard-fired material, and the leaf pattern across its face is painted by hand.

Can it go in the dishwasher and the microwave?

Yes. The maker states that it goes in the dishwasher, the microwave and the oven, so it suits everyday use as well as special occasions.

How big is the plate?

It is 15cm long, 11.5cm wide and 2cm tall and weighs 0.3KG, a small plate for cake, biscuits, butter or nibbles rather than a full meal.

Is every plate painted exactly the same?

No. The leaf is painted by hand, so the brush strokes vary slightly from one plate to the next, which gives each plate its own character.

Can I use it away from the dining table?

Yes. Its size suits a dressing table as a tray for rings and earrings, the hall as a place for keys, or the bathroom as a soap dish.
