Description

The HDL30 is a hands free head torch rated at 400 lumens on its high mode, the figure printed on its retail pack. Five modes sit behind the button on top, and two of them are red and green night vision colours that let you read a map or find a tent peg without losing your dark adaptation or dazzling whoever is next to you. The pack also gives a beam reach of 80 metres and a runtime of 4 hours. Three AAA alkaline cells are supplied in the box, so there is nothing else to buy before the first outing. The grey and white head unit sits on an adjustable dark headband.

A head torch earns its keep whenever both hands are busy. This one suits dog walks down unlit lanes, camping and night fishing, loft and cupboard rummaging, a bike repair at the roadside, or finding the fuse box in a power cut. Eighty metres of reach picks out a gate, a path junction or a reflective collar long before you get to it, and the lower settings keep things civil on a campsite. Anglers, runners and stargazers tend to reach for the red mode, because red light barely disturbs eyes that have already adjusted to the dark. IPX4 protection is marked on the pack, which covers rain and splashes from any direction rather than being dropped in water.

The single button on top runs the modes, so there is one control to find in the dark. The cells are ordinary AAA alkalines, so a spare set is cheap to carry and easy to replace. We sell it as one head torch per unit, with a minimum order of four in multiples of four, which suits a van, a scout group or a household. They are the night vision colours. Coloured light at a low level lets you see close work without undoing the dark adaptation your eyes have built up, and it disturbs other people nearby far less than white light.

What colour temperature is the white light?

Neither the retail pack nor the manufacturer gives a colour temperature in kelvin for this model, so we do not quote one. The pack marks white, red and green modes and nothing further.

Will it cope with rain?

The pack marks IPX4, which is protection against splashing water from any direction. Rain and spray are fine, but that rating does not cover immersion.
