Description

The HDL20 is a hands-free head torch built around a three LED front module, and the pack puts it at 325 lumens on its highest setting with a beam reaching 70 metres. It runs on three AAA alkaline cells, and those cells come in the pack, so there is nothing else to buy before the first use. The housing and the strap are red, which makes the torch easy to pick out of a rucksack or a van tray.

A head torch earns its keep wherever you want both hands free: under a car bonnet, up a ladder, in a loft, on a dog walk down an unlit lane, or in a tent when the lantern is at the other end. The strap adjusts through a slider, so it sits over a bare head, a beanie or a hood without pinching. Control is a single switch on the top of the housing. The pack states four modes and a dimmer running from 10 to 100 per cent, so you can drop the output right down for close work at arm's length and keep the full 325 lumens for when you actually need the distance. Runtime is printed as 5 hours. The pack also rates it IPX4, which covers splashing water from any direction, so rain on a walk or spray off a wet wheel arch is fine, though it is not made to be submerged. Each unit is sold on its own with its three AAA cells, and the minimum order is 4, sold in multiples of 4.

The pack prints 5 hours. Running at a lower dimmer setting rather than full output is the usual way to stretch that further.

The pack rates it IPX4, meaning splashing water from any direction. Rain and spray are fine, but it is not built to be dropped in water.

The strap adjusts through a slider on the band, so it can be let out over a beanie or a hood and pulled back in for a bare head.
