Description

The HDL10 is a hands free LED head torch rated at 250 lumens on its high mode, with the pack quoting a 60 metre beam. Two LEDs sit behind a shatterproof lens in a small front housing, and a single button on the top steps between the two modes: a brighter setting for distance and a lower one for close work at arm's length. The housing pivots on the band, so the beam can be angled down onto your hands rather than straight ahead. The band itself is teal, elasticated and runs through two sliding adjusters. Three AAA alkaline batteries come in the pack.

A head torch earns its keep anywhere you need both hands free: under the bonnet, up in the loft, behind a meter cupboard, or on an unlit lane with the dog. At this size it is the one that lives in a coat pocket or a glovebox rather than the one you pack for an expedition, and 250 lumens is plenty for the jobs most people actually reach for a head torch to do. Do I need to buy batteries separately?

No. Three AAA alkaline cells are supplied in the pack, so the torch works straight away. Keeping a spare set of AAA cells to hand is worth doing for winter use.

How bright is 250 lumens in real terms?

It is enough to light a footpath, a loft or an engine bay clearly, with the pack quoting a 60 metre beam on the high mode. The lower mode is the one for reading a label or working at arm's length without dazzle.

How long will it run on one set of cells?

The pack states seven hours. Running on the lower of the two modes rather than the high mode will generally stretch a set of alkaline cells further.

Will it survive being caught out in the rain?
