GU10 LED Bulb 4.8W 450lm Non-Dimmable - Warm White 3000K

This is a GU10 LED spotlight rated at 4.8W, giving 450 lumens in a narrow 36 degree cone at a warm white 3000K. The GU10 cap is the twist and lock two pin fitting used in most UK downlights and track heads: if the bulb you are taking out has two stubby pins that push up and turn a quarter turn, this is the one you want. The body is white with a clear faceted lens over the LED array. By our own reckoning against the equivalence table for this lamp type, it stands in for a 50W halogen spot.

A 36 degree beam is on the tight side for a spotlight, which means light lands where you point it rather than spilling across the whole ceiling. That suits a run of kitchen downlights over a worktop, a track head aimed at a picture or a shelf of glassware, or a row of spots down a hallway where you want pools of light rather than a flat wash. At 3000K the light reads as warm white: gentler than a daylight lamp, and a little cleaner than the deeper amber of a filament bulb. It sits comfortably with wood, cream paint and brass.

Will this fit my existing halogen downlights?

If the old lamp has two stubby pins about 10mm apart that push in and twist a quarter turn to lock, that is a GU10 and this will fit straight in. A 12V MR16 with two thin straight pins is a different fitting.

Can I use it on a dimmer switch?

No. This lamp is non dimmable, so it needs an ordinary on and off switch. On a dimmer circuit it may flicker or buzz and is likely to fail well before its rated life.

How bright is 450 lumens in practice?

Held against the equivalence table for this lamp type, 450 lumens in a 36 degree cone does the job of a 50W halogen spot, which is the usual output people are replacing in a kitchen or hallway downlight.

What does a 36 degree beam look like on a worktop?

It gives a defined pool rather than a broad wash, so from a standard ceiling height you get a bright circle roughly a metre and a half across. Space your spots accordingly if you want even coverage.

Is 3000K warmer or cooler than the usual warm white bulb?

3000K is a warm white with a touch more clarity than the deeper 2700K used in filament lamps, and noticeably softer than a 4000K cool white or a daylight lamp.
