Description

The Durium is an armchair built from two parts: a slim frame of black rolled iron, and a padded seat and back in aged tan leather that sits inside it. The frame is drawn in thin square lines, open on every face, with the arms running straight from the back down to the front uprights and a rectangle of iron at floor level tying the legs together. The leather is soft and full, creased where it has been filled rather than pulled taut, and the tan runs lighter and darker across the hide.

It is a lounge chair, seat and back both cushioned, made to sit back in rather than to sit up at a table. The shape belongs in the corner of a living room, beside a window, or at the end of a bedroom. The frame is open on all four sides, so it does not close off a corner the way a solid armchair does. The iron is finished rustic, matt and left rough rather than polished, and it reads black against the tan of the leather.

The leather is buffalo hide, and it is a by-product. The frame is iron. Because the hide is a natural material, the grain, the creasing and the depth of the tan vary from chair to chair, so no two are alike. It weighs 13kg.

Frequently Asked

What is the frame made from?

Rolled iron, finished matt black.

What leather is it?

Buffalo hide, in an aged tan. It is a by-product.

How heavy is it?

13kg.

Does the leather vary between chairs?

Yes. It is a natural hide, so the grain, the creasing and the depth of the tan differ from one chair to the next.

How do I look after the leather?

Wipe it clean with a soft, dry cloth, and keep chemicals and household cleaners off it. To stop the leather drying out and cracking, feed it with a specialist leather product, or with petroleum jelly or flax oil.
