Digha Wooden Floor Lamp Base - Dark Stain & Antique Brass

The Digha is a floor lamp base made of two things: a straight pole of dark stained mango wood, and a wide flared brass foot that the pole drops into. The foot is a shallow trumpet 31cm across, the pole runs unbroken to a brass collar near the top, and a slim brass stem carries the lampholder above that. The stain is close to espresso and the grain shows through it in redder streaks. It stands 142cm to the lampholder.

The flared foot is what holds it: at 5.2kg the weight is in the brass at floor level rather than anywhere up the pole, so the lamp stays put with a wide shade on top. At 142cm the lampholder sits above the head of anyone seated, which keeps the bulb out of view from a chair and throws the light out across the room rather than into a face. That suits the end of a sofa or a corner. It takes one E27 bulb up to 60W, the flex runs 3.5m with a switch on the cord, and it is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms.

Mango is a fast growing hardwood and a by-product of fruit growing. Each pole is shaped and carved by hand before the dark stain goes on, so the depth of colour and the grain running through it differ from one to the next. The Digha range also holds a table lamp base in the same wood and brass. No shade and no bulb are included.

Does a shade come with it?

No, this is the base alone. A wide drum suits the 31cm foot and balances the plain pole.

Is the foot brass or brass coloured?

The foot and the collar are aluminium in an antique brass finish, and the pole is mango wood. The finish is the metal you see; the material underneath is lighter than solid brass would be.

Will it stay upright with a big shade?

At 5.2kg with a 31cm foot, most of the weight is at floor level, which is what the flared shape is doing. Keep the shade within the width of the foot and it stays balanced.

How do I care for it?

A soft dry cloth on both the wood and the brass. No harsh chemicals and no abrasive cleaners, and unplug it first.
