Description
This pair of wooden Christmas decorations takes the form of two nutcracker soldiers, each 38cm tall, 8cm long and 7cm wide. One is a drummer with a stick in each hand. The other holds a sword and wears a tasselled hat, with fringed epaulettes on his shoulders. Both have fluffy beards and hair, painted faces with neat moustaches, belted tunics and tall boots. The multicoloured paintwork carries on round the back, so they look finished from every side. They are made from pine and MDF.
At 38cm they have real height, so they hold their own on a mantelpiece, a windowsill or the top of a chest of drawers rather than getting lost among smaller ornaments. Stand them side by side by the front door to greet guests, or give one to each of two rooms. One sits on a square base and the other on a round one, a small difference that makes them read as a pair of characters rather than twins. They suit anyone who likes a traditional, storybook Christmas and brings out the same decorations each December, and they make a thoughtful gift for a friend's first home.
Pine is a softwood with a fine, even grain, and MDF is a dense, smooth board that takes paint well. The detail on these two is worth a close look: buttons and braid on the tunics, laces on the swordsman's boots, a fleur-de-lis on his hat and a triangle on the drum. The listed weight is 0.83KG. To style them, set one at each end of a mantelpiece with a run of greenery between, or stand them on a stack of books on a sideboard so their faces sit nearer eye level.
