Description

The Columbia is a 21cm sand timer with white sand running through a hand-blown glass tube, held in a four-column antique brass frame on a circular base. The sand runs for approximately 60 minutes from full to empty, making this both a functional timer and a decorative desk accent. The antique brass finish shows a warm, slightly oxidised tone with subtle tonal variation across the metal.

Designed for desks, shelves and side tables where a slower, visible passage of time adds focus or ritual to a task, the Columbia works as a kitchen timer for slow-cooked dishes, a desk reminder for timed work intervals, or simply as a sculptural object in its own right. The four brass columns converge at top and bottom around ball finials, and the glass tube is sealed at both ends so no sand escapes. The 7.8cm-square footprint sits comfortably on most surfaces without taking up significant desk space.

The antique brass is untreated and will continue to darken with age and handling, developing a richer patina over time. The white sand inside the tube contrasts cleanly with the brass and glass, making the flow visible from several metres away. At 490g the timer has enough weight to feel substantial without being prone to tipping, and the circular base distributes the load evenly across the footprint.
