Description
Clarabel is a small stoneware sculpture that doubles as a tealight holder. A figure with long hair, a simple face and a striped top stands behind a cup with a scalloped, petal-like rim, and the tealight sits in that cup. Her arms curve out and down to her hips, leaving two open loops either side of the body, so the shape reads clearly from across a room. The surface is grainy and speckled, and the piece is multicoloured, with stripes across the top and a contrasting cup. At 12cm tall, 12cm wide and 9cm long, and weighing 0.18KG, it is a small piece for a shelf or a windowsill rather than a large centrepiece.
It suits a bookshelf, a mantelpiece, a windowsill or a bedside table, and makes a thoughtful small gift for anyone who likes figurative ceramics. Lit, a tealight gives a low, warm glow on a cosy evening; unlit, the figure still earns its place as a small sculpture in its own right. When it is not holding a candle, the cup can take a ring or a pair of earrings on a dressing table. With the cup at the front, it looks best placed so the face and the open loops of the arms turn towards the room.
It is made from 100% stoneware. Stoneware is a dense ceramic fired at high temperature, so it has a solid feel. The speckles run across the whole piece, from the figure's hair, which is marked with fine lines, to the scalloped cup. The tealight and any other styling props shown are not included. For a simple arrangement, set it beside a short stack of books or a small potted plant, and let the tealight pick out the stripes and the petal rim after dark.
