Description

A pair of small stoneware mugs, each 8cm tall and 8.7cm across, holding 325ml. The clay is speckled and takes a matt white glaze over the upper half, with a second glaze in yellow over the lower half, and where the two meet the white breaks into a scalloped caramel band round the body. The speckle carries through the white as fine dark flecks.

Each mug holds 325ml, which is a filled mug of tea or coffee rather than a small cup, and at 8cm tall against 8.7cm across it is a squat shape rather than a tall one. The pair is the unit: two mugs arrive together, both in yellow. The same mug is made in chocolate brown, so a shelf can carry two pairs in two colours.

The mugs are stoneware, made from a speckled clay and coated in a matt white glaze, with the contrasting yellow glaze laid over the lower half afterwards. They are fired at a high temperature in a reducing atmosphere, and that is what gives the glaze its softly varied colour rather than a flat even one. The pair weighs 0.26kg.
