Description
Bobo is a lidded storage basket woven in the shape of an elephant, with a trunk that curls out from the front, a broad ear on each side and closed eyes picked out in stitched eyelashes. The lid is a pointed, striped cone, like the top of a circus tent, finished with a fluffy pompom that doubles as the handle for lifting it. It is 85% water hyacinth in its natural shade, with 10% iron and 5% wool, and it stands 35cm long, 35cm wide and 50cm tall.
At 50cm tall it is a floor basket rather than a shelf one, with room for gathering soft toys, building blocks, dressing-up clothes or a spare blanket at the end of the day. It sits happily in a nursery, a child's bedroom or a playroom, and once the lid is closed, the clutter disappears and a friendly elephant keeps watch from the corner of the room instead. The basket itself weighs 1.7KG, so moving it from one room to another at tidying time is easy. It makes a cheerful present for a child's room, and it works just as well in a sitting room as a home for throws and cushions.
Water hyacinth is the stem of a water plant, dried and twisted into a cord before it is woven, and that twist shows in every row of this basket. The face, ears and trunk are woven as raised pieces on the body, which gives the elephant real depth when light falls across it, and small metal fittings sit at the rim of the lid. The eyelashes are stitched, and the full pompom is ready for small hands to grab. For styling, set it on a soft rug beside a bed or a low bookcase and leave the lid clear, so the stripes and the pompom stay the first thing anyone sees.
