Description

A square panel of woven hemp and jute, 50cm each way, set in a plain mango wood frame. The ground is a flat open weave in pale straw, and over it a diamond is worked in raised loops of thicker jute, with stepped arms running out from it towards the corners and a border of stepped blocks round the edge. The raised work stands well proud of the ground, so the pattern reads in shadow as much as in colour.

At 50cm square and 4cm deep it hangs flat against the wall and reads from across a room, where a side light catches the raised loops and lifts the pattern out of the ground. One panel goes above a console table or a bed. Two hung side by side above a sofa read as a pair.

The weaving is hemp and jute, worked on a handloom, and the frame is mango wood. Jute is a rain-fed crop that needs little in the way of fertiliser or pesticide, and the fibre is spun into thread before it is woven, braided and stitched. Because every panel is worked by hand, the loops sit at slightly different heights and the diamond is never twice the same size. Bawal is also made with a triangle design and with a cross.
