Avanthi Upholstered Sleigh Bench - Natural

The Avanthi is a bench 145cm long, with a mango wood frame and a seat upholstered in natural linen. At each end a low rail of three short spindles rises about 11cm above the seat, and the end posts and top rails rake outwards, which is what gives it the sleigh shape. The legs are square in section and rake out as well, and a long stretcher runs the length of the bench near the floor with two short cross pieces bracing it. The wood is pale, with the grain showing through the finish.

The seat sits 49cm from the floor, 125cm wide and 40cm deep, so it is long enough for two adults with room between them. That 40cm depth suits a hallway, where the bench takes a shallow run of wall, leaves room to pass and takes shoes underneath it. At the foot of a bed it sits below mattress height.

The frame is mango wood, hand carved, and the seat pad is upholstered in linen. Mango is cut for timber only once the trees have stopped bearing fruit, so the grain and the colour vary from bench to bench. The whole bench weighs 13.8kg. The same bench is also made in charcoal.

How should it be looked after?

Blot spills straight away with a clean sponge or cloth, and vacuum the linen regularly. It can be cleaned professionally. Some shedding of fibre is to be expected, and the colour may fade where it sits in direct sunlight.
